When you hear it presented, it always seems like a good deal, but there’s no such thing as a free lunch. The promise of FREE gas, FREE this or FREE that seems very enticing, especially when in addition to the FREE item the company says you don’t have to pay your deductible. Your not totally sure your windshield even needs replacement because it’s just got a small chip in it; but it’s FREE so why should I care? Or should you?

When a broken windshield is replaced, most insurance carriers require that you pay your comprehensive deductible to the glass shop performing the repair. If you get one of these companies who will offer something for FREE, and waive your deductible,
they may be inflating the bill to your insurance company. That is considere insurance fraud, which is a crime. In this case, you may be held responsible to pay the bill and you may be part of a criminal investigation.

Premiums Can Increase

Just like with most fraud, the insurance companies will most likely pass on the costs associated with these claims to their policy holders in the form of increased premiums.

Quality Installation and Warranty?

Since many of these companies are not using trained installers, the quality of your installation may be suspect. Today, many vehicles require special adhesives to ensure proper deployment of air bags and other safety features of the vehicle. These products typically cost more and may not be used by these companies. With regards to the warranty, these companies are typcially not around for the long haul and getting a warranty repair done 12 months down the road may be an impossibility.

Reputable businesses don’t operate in this fashion. The fly by night companies are only out to make a quick buck and don’t care about quality or customer service. If you are approached in a parking lot or some other public venue, just walk away. If you are in need of a windshield replacement or repair, consult a trusted information source or ask people you know for a referral.
